Duergar Run

6TH FEB 2027

Seeing is believing.  10 mile trail run around the Simonside hills at night all under the watchful eyes of the mythical Duergars.

Not far from Rothbury lies one of the most beautiful and fabled areas of Northumberland, the Simonside Hills. Popular amongst walkers, runners and photographers for their stunning vistas, the hills of Simonside hold another piece of largely unknown notoriety; Duergar!

We invite you to take on this unique challenge of a 10 mile trail run in the Simonside hills at night. Night run events are about having fun, being social and exploring the outdoors. Whether you’re a first-time runner or an experienced trail runner this event will have something for you. Headtorches essential!

The dwarfs of Simonside, or Duergar, are rumoured to take great satisfaction in leading travellers astray after nightfall. Lighting their torches, they stay ahead of confused visitors, leading them deeper into the often pitch black Northumberland wilderness until they fall into a bog or plunge from a precipice to their demise.

What you will need to bring

One of your most important pieces of kit for a nighttime trail run will be a high-quality head torch. Please wear clothing that you are comfortable running in but also suitable for the weather conditions and the significant climatic changes that can take place over the duration of the event at this time of year.

  • Off-road trainers/trail shoes.
  • Headtorch (check this is fully charged)
  • Full body cover (either worn or carried) including waterproof jacket
  • Mobile phone. It can be a vital lifeline in an emergency.
  • Emergency foil space blanket
  • Emergency whistle
  • Enough fluid/nutrition for a 10 mile run

We rely on you using your own experience and judgement about what additional equipment you may want to bring.

Run Route

The 10 mile course is a single loop that will start from Haugh Car Park (300m from Jubilee Hall). The route follows paths and trails as it climbs the top of Simonside Crag before returning to Rothbury. The course will be marshalled and have reflective marker flags and directional arrows on course. The trails are a mixture of gravel and trail paths with some rocky sections to negotiate, so please note that appropriate trail shoes must be worn, road running shoes will not be suitable for this event.

Aid Stations

There will be one water station on the course which doubles up as the 3 mile & 8 mile distances.

Run Timing

We will record finish times via a scanner at the finishline, a link to the live results will be available on the event website. Please ensure your run number is visible after you cross the finish line. If you drop out of the event at any time after you have registered and collected your run number, then you must go to the nearest checkpoint/marshal or Registration and let them know you are dropping out. We will have a final count of who has finished so if you drop out and don’t notify us then we’ll presume you are missing and a lot of people will start looking for you! This run is part of the Shadowlands Winter Trail Series so finishing places count towards an overall points system.

Categories

For most this is a fun run out into the hills.  For those that wish to race there are prizes on offer.  This run is a stand alone race as well as race 3 of the Shadowlands Winter Trail Series.  Categories available on the day are, both male and female:

OVERALL 1/2/3

V40 1/2/3

V50 1/2/3

Refreshments at the finish

All finishers can enjoy a complimentary cup of hot spiced wine and/or a hot chocolate and throughout the evening Newcastle House Hotel will have a variety of refreshments available to purchase.

Difficulty

The distance is achievable by most runners but there is an added degree of difficultly due to this being at night and in the winter.  As long as you are a reasonably capable trail runner then you will have no issues.

Cut-Off Times

There are no cut-off times for this race.  As long as you are not crawling on your hands and knees and stopping for a picnic we will be waiting for you.

Can I bring a dog?

Unfortunately, due to restrictions under UKA rules, dogs are not permitted to run with you.  They are welcome anywhere in and around Rothbury.

Is the route fully marked?

Yes the course will be fully marked with directional signs and reflective markers.  If you are using a gpx device then we have a file to download above.

What should I do if I see a Duergar?
